1941 – 1945

  • During the war years, Steinway & Sons in the United States has sold approximately 5,000 pianos. About 50% of them go to the United States Armed Forces, and the rest, to the “approved essencial users”: religious organizations, educational institutions, hotels and places of public gathering. A considerable number of these pianos come from the depression-era inventory.
  • As a protection against pro-German and anti-American accusations, Theodore E. Steinway orders to display numerous American flags outside and inside Steinway Hall. A special display, arranged by Steinway & Sons retail manager Byron Collins, features American soldiers around the Victory Vertical. Photographs of Steinway family members in American military uniforms, from the Civil War, the Great War, and the current war in Europe, Africa and on the Pacific. A cartouche on the showroom wall lists the names of all Steinway & Sons workers serving in the United States Armed Forces.
