- William Steinway’s diary: “Danl Mayer arrived monday, had a long talk with him then and yesterday + finally arrange terms for Tretbar under our guarantee to engage Paderewski from Novbr 16/91 to April 30th 1892 at £6000 for 80 Concerts. We hold a board of Trustee Meeting and with the exception of Fred. T. St. who votes nay, we other 4 vote “Aye” and conclude contract.” In addition to money for concerts, the contract promises Paderewski “all expenses for travel and hotel accommodations, including the two ocean crossings (paid)”. Anything Paderewski may earn above the sum mentioned in the contract, will be his. Steinway & Sons will also provide a tuner to prepare the piano in accordance with the “wishes of Mr. Paderewski, as much as possible.” In return the company will have Paderewski’s exclusive endorsement of Steinway & Sons pianos, and a “testimony about their grand pianos at the termination of the tournee”.
- By the time the contract is signed, neither William Steinway, nor any of Steinway family members have ever heard Paderewski play, so the contract should be fully credited to Daniel Mayer’s enthusiasm.
