  • Arthur von Holwede, the tuner that was brought to America by Theodor Steinweg in 1865, Steinway & Sons’ former chief piano tuner, and later Hamburg’s Steinway Pianofabrik head of manufacturing, retires.
  • Steinway & Sons workers organize a 28-piece Steinway Factory Orchestra, conducted by Heinz Horster. Names of some of the players are still known: Jess Manyoky, John Furlong and Frank H. Walsh – violin; Michael Bogyos – clarinet. Steinway Factory Orchestra plays for workers during lunch hour, once a month at Rikers and Ditmars.
