Paul Bilhuber writes a memorandum to Steinway & Sons dealer B.H. Collins, to address a prospective buyer’s concern about a chance of the soundboard developing cracks: “the warranty repairs of whatever kind made on pianos over a period from April to September 1930, only 8 percent had anything to do with soundboards… No manufacturer can truly say that he has insured his soundboard against cracks and checks forever… I think Mr. Aiken can explain to his prospect that the risk she is running on this score in buying a Steinway is very slight indeed and whatever risk there is, is amply offset by the superior tone quality of the instrument.”
