- The opening of Steinway & Sons’ dealers’ convention in New York. After the party the previous night, hosted by Steinway & Sons at the New York Athletic Club, the 125 dealers gather in the morning at Steinway Hall, board five charter buses and go to Astoria factory, where Theodore E. Steinway makes a brief speech ( “Gentlemen, you are participating in the birth of a new Steinway!”) and then theatrically pulls a curtain, to reveal the Model S “baby grand”.
- The Model S rests on a specially built platform, surrounded by twelve more Steinway Baby Grands, spaced far apart so that groups of dealers can gather around each instrument. The Model S in various stages of construction is exhibited nearby.
- Steinway & Sons offers the new piano to dealers for $503 wholesale. The retail price is set at $885 for Model S in mahogany case, and $910 for Model S in walnut.
- On behalf of all dealers, Steinway & Sons Chicago dealer Ray Durham makes a speech in response, and presents Theodore E. Steinway with an order for Model S pianos to the amount of almost $3,000,000 – at the time, the largest single order in the history of piano industry.
- Josef Hofmann buys 50 Model S pianos for Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
