January 1968

That month’s issue of Japan Music Trades contains an article in which Genichi Kawakami pledges that Yamaha will “catch up with, and pass up, Steinway”. The same publication includes a full-page advertisement of Yamaha pianos, claiming the right to some of Steinway & Sons’ pianomaking technology innovations. Yamaha will continue to advertise Steinway family innovations as its own for many years to come. For example, Yamaha will claim credit to a bar on the piano plate, that had been used by Steinway & Sons since 1860s.
