The entire workforce of Steinway & Son (approximately 1,100 people) visits Philadelphia for the Centennial Exhibition. Having taken a steamer across the Hudson River to Jersey City, and from there two chartered trains to Philadelphia, the workers, upon arrival to the Centennial Depot at Philadelphia, form a column nearly a mile long and, accompanied by a band, march to the grounds of the Centennial Exhibition. There pianist Friedrich Boscovitz plays a special recital for the Steinway & Sons employees, and then everybody spread around, viewing the exhibits. (Several workers miss the return train to New York, and William Steinway has to organize transportation for them).
