Charles Steinway writes to his brother C.F. Theodor: “At this moment I am sitting in uniform with my sabre and cloak, balancing my accounts. Then off to Washington as the paymaster of the 5th Regiment of the New York Militia. Tomorrow at 1 o’clock we are going by the steamer Baltic to Annapolis and from there by foot and train to Washington.”
