  • The next day after the explosion William Steinway presides over the Rapid Transit franchise auction in City Hall. The proposed city’s subway system received no support: no one wants to buy the franchise.
  • In a perfect example of bad timing, New York Times publishes the citywide transportation plan, developed by William Steinway’s Rapid Transit Commission: “Our plans call for a four-track road of steel rails from the Battery to the upper part of Manhattan island. The two middle tracks are for express trains, to run at forty miles per hour and to stop not nearer than one mile of each other. When this is accomplished merchants and store clerks, who now stand and sit about downtown restaurants for their lunches, will jump aboard these cars and get home in five, ten or fifteen minutes for luncheon with their families.”
