William Steinway’s diary: “I & Chas. with Chas. 6 inch Revolver try Classen’s Patent impenetrable Vest at Pythagoras Hall I hit it at every shot, only a slight dent is perceptible, but the ball is thrown back perfectly flattened, Capt. Menshausen The same eve. fires at it with oblong balls from his Army Revolver, shots also being thrown back without penetrating the Vest.” This entry reflects Steinway family fascination with firearms, as well as William Steinway’s interest in advanced contemporary technology.
