William Steinway’s diary: “Agent Mayer wants us to take up pianists I.J. Paderewski, a Pole, and Wasily Sapellnikoff, a Russian from Odessa.” This takes place during William Steinway’s stay in London, and Daniel Mayer mentioned here is not only a prominent concert manager, but also the director of the artist department of the Erard Piano Company. William Steinway finds the price too high, and refuses the contract with Daniel Mayer.
