Ten Steinway & Sons pianos are chosen at the Steinway & Sons factory in Astoria on that day, for the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, Columbus, GA – and the school’s selection group is treated to VIP seating at Lang Lang’s historic performance (on the Red Steinway) with the New York Philharmonic in Central Park that evening. The school had received a $2,000,000 gift from the Maxine R. and Jack S. Schiffman Foundation, allowing it to become an All-Steinway School. (See the corresponding next month entry.)
