William Steinway’s diary: “Mr. Ernest Hall calls, brings me figures signed by Bristow I give him $250. for legal services. […] Vandyke called early, tell him that Hall brought Bristow’s figures & Certificates […] letter from Prof. Watson, which states that he will sign certificates & write all those letters to the other jurors.” The significance of Professor Watson’s letter must not be underestimated: he promises to arrange the communication between Steinway & Sons and all the members of the Centennial’s Group XXV jury (not just the musical instruments judges), to make possible obtaining all their signatures on the certificate stating that Steinway & Sons received the highest average points, which implies the first and highest award of the Exhibition.
