Fifteen-year-old Heinrch Engelhard Steinweg, his father and three older brothers (who have recently returned from war), and also two hired laborers, caught in a forest by a hurricane and thunderstorm, seek shelter in a hut made of tree bark. A bolt of lightning strikes the hut, killing everyone, except Heinrich.
