William Steinway’s diary: “Albert to Albany to push our 4th Avenue Bridge matter & see Depew and Wenzel.” This is the first time William Steinway has mentioned the Fourth Avenue Bridge (a.k.a. Blackwell Island Bridge) in his diary. He plans to build a three-thousand feet-long bridge, connecting Manhattan and Long Island via Blackwell Island (currently known as Roosevelt Island). The purpose of building the bridge is to simplify transportation between Manhattan and Queens, which would reduce the cost of Steinway & Sons manufacturing. (Eventually that bridge will be built, even though not during William Steinway’s lifetime. Open in 1909, it’s currently known as “Queensborough Bridge”.)
