March – April 1864

  • The strike continues. Steinway & Sons struggles with quality problems, discovered in the pianos built shortly before the strike.
  • Henry Steinway, Jr.’s feedback to a piano shipped for him to Havana: “A disgusting mess. […] Those jerks did not even remove half of the grease”. Henry Steinway, Jr. dismantles the piano and completely rebuilds it.
  •  Alone in the empty factory, Charles Steinway tries to finish half-built pianos single-handedly.
  •  Making the best of the strike, the Steinways replace the steam boiler that drives the machinery, the job for which they would otherwise have to shut down the factory.
  • New Steinway & Sons showroom on 14th Street is finished, but cannot be open to public and press due to the lack of new pianos.
