  • Henry Z. Steinway writes in his memorandum to Robert G. Campbell: “I ask that quality improvement be our most important objective next year – more important than meeting production schedules and inventory levels. We will rise or fall on the good opinion, and the ability to buy of the serious amateur… CBS wants to believe that everything should go up 10% per year… We must look inward and see that we do, in fact produce the best piano in the world, and build the organization that can engineer, control and manufacture it.”
  • In the same memorandum Henry Z. Steinway reports to Robert G. Campbell that Steinway & Sons retail sales are weakening: “The word going around in music lovers’ circles that Steinway is not what it used to be before CBS.”
