Yet another “Letter to Our Dealers and Agents” from William Steinway (the original one is dated by August 15, 1878), recommending ebonized cherry-wood veneer. In the letter, William Steinway argues that cherry veneer, with its small pores, is “absolutely imprevious to the effects of a damp atmosphere” and, with its “evenness, and unbroken length fibers”, exerts “a most beneficial influence and effect upon the vibration and sound of the instrument.” (In Europe ebonized cherry-wood will become – and remain – the veneer of choice for all Steinway & Sons pianos.)
