New York Times reports that the entire New York Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared outside the Clarendon Hotel where Rubinstein and Wieniawski are staying – and performed a serenade, an honor rarely bestowed and most recently more than twenty years before, for singer Jenny Lind. “The desire to see Rubinstein, joined to the exquisite harmonies of the Philharmonic orchestra attracted a large concourse of people… and between the morceaux loud cheers and calls were given for Rubinstein”. The maestro appears on the balcony and addresses the crown in excellent English: “Gentlemen: I cannot find words to express my feelings of the gratitude that overpowers me; but I do assure you that I am deeply sensible of the honor you have conferred upon me and the recollection of it will be one of the happiest moments of my life”.
