The Minutes of the Board of Trustees of Steinway & Sons record a letter from the union, escalating its demand: reduction of the workweek from 48 to 44 hours, overtime paid double, no work on Sunday, minimum pay of $36 per week for “daywork” and minimum pay $42 for piecework – and finally, a “closed shop”: all Steinway & Sons workers must be members of the union. (The latter demand will not be satisfied until 20 years later: see the entry for December 1, 1939.)
