1862

  • Steinway & Sons builds its first upright piano.
  • By this year Steinway & Sons has received thirty-five awards from various exhibitions.
  • C.F. Theodor Steinweg requests financial help from his New York family. Without delay, his father and brothers send money, as well as blueprints and detailed technical specifications to 6 different Steinway & Sons pianos. (C.F. Theodor will build several pianos based on these blueprints. A few instruments, marked “Steinway & Sons, New York – Braunschweig” still exist.)
  • John Jacob Decker and his brothers David, having previously worked alongside Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg and his son William at Bacon & Raven, and then for Steinway & Sons, start their own pianomaking business, the Decker Brothers – at 85 Varick Street, in the same building where Steinway & Sons had their first shop. Eventually the Decker Brothers will become worthy competitors to Steinway & Sons.
