  • William Steinway installs a telephone line between Astoria plant, Fourth Avenue factory and Steinway Hall.
  • By this year, approximately 500 of Steinway & Sons’ 1,000 employees work in Astoria.
  • “Alma Tadema Piano” goes to London for inlay and paintings by noted Victorian Artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, for Henry Marquand, Art Collector and 2nd President of the New York Metropolitian Museum of Art. The artist decorates the piano with “Wandering Minstrels” painting above the keyboard, and nine muses on the lid.
