1895

  • By this year, the United States Post Office acknowledges “Steinway” as an independent village in Astoria, population 7,000.
  • Notwithstanding the increased interest in horseless carriages after Daimler’s Paris-Bordeaux race victory, Daimler Motor Company in New York continues to lose money. The company employs almost a hundred workers, who build engines, motorboats, and motor carriages.
  • Steinway & Sons sues the German firm Grotrian-Steinweg (former successors of C.F. Theodor Steinweg’s business), trying to prevent their use of the name “Steinweg” on its pianos. (Steinway & Sons will lose its case against Grotrian-Steinweg next year.)
