1918

  • Steinway’s net profit: $128,000.
  • The beginning of the Spanish flu pandemic that will last until 1920, and will kill, by different estimates, $50,000,000 to $100,000,000 people in the world (3% to 6% of the world’s human population). In 1919, the pandemic will reach New York (and will cause, among thousands of deaths, the death of Charles H. Steinway).
  • The world is ready for the major technological shift: the era of personal radio is about to begin. There are about 5,000 radios in the United States, home-made by the radio enthusiasts. (Fifteen years later, two third of American homes will have at least one radio. This will have major impact on people’s musical perception throughout the world, separating performers from listeners, and will lead to the major decrease in piano sales.)
