  • Henry Z. Steinway and Steinway & Sons workers union leader James Cerofeci sign a three-year union contract, giving the workers 10 cents per hour pay increase in the first year, no increase in the second year, and five cents per hour pay increase in the third year. The new contract earns James Cerofeci the nickname “Coca-Cola Kid”, because the workers remark that the offered pay increase is just enough to buy a bottle of a soft drink.
  • Henry Z. Steinway holds at Steinway Hall a 10th anniversary celebration of Van Cliburn’s debut with New York Philharmonic. Approximately 800 guests attend the celebration.
